Update 15 August

COACHING: BOOKING NOW OPEN

Group coaching - for adults as well as juniors - will be starting again shortly.  All the details of dates, times and prices are now on the Tennis Coaching page.

CLUB NIGHTS

We're delighted to say that, following new LTA guidelines, Club Sessions can now resume.

TUESDAYS are Social Evenings for everyone to meet and play, any time from 5.30 onwards.  All members are very welcome.

THURSDAYS are Team Practice Nights for all members interested in playing team tennis.  If you're interested in playing matches for any of our teams in the upcoming Winter League, do come and join in, any time from 6 o'clock onwards.

It is very good to be able to meet and mix again, but it is obviously vital that social distancing continues to be observed.  Please do not gather in close groups (and never in groups of more than 6). And please make a point of bringing hand sanitiser for use immediately after play and when entering the clubhouse.  (Sanitiser is also available inside the clubhouse.)  We are still unable to open the bar, kitchen or conservatory, but there will be access to changing rooms/toilets.  We would appreciate it if all members would please read the LTA's latest guidelines for players: https://www.lta.org.uk/globalassets/news/2020/lta-guidance-for-tennis-players---covid-19.pdf

JUNIOR CAMPS   Our final Summer Tennis Camp for our junior members runs from Monday to Friday in the week beginning August 17th.  9 till 11 each morning is for 5-9 year olds, 11.30 till 1.30 for 10-16 year olds.  Group numbers are restricted by Covid requirements, so the camps will be occupying a maximum of two courtsPlease note therefore that from  9 till 11 each morning there will always still be TWO OR THREE COURTS AVAILABLE FOR GENERAL PLAY, and from  11.30 till 1.30 each day there will always be TWO COURTS AVAILABLE FOR GENERAL PLAY.

Some sessions are fully booked, but there may be one or two spaces still available, so if you’d like to book places for your children, please be quick!  Just drop a line to woodstockltc@gmail.com for details of what’s still free.

CLUBHOUSE   Under new LTA guidelines, the clubhouse is now open again, but for access to the toilets only.  Please do not use the kitchen or other areas, which remain strictly out of bounds.  It is obviously important to continue to observe social distance: ONLY ONE PERSON AT A TIME SHOULD BE IN EACH CHANGING ROOM, GENTS OR LADIES.  PLEASE ALLOW EACH OTHER PLENTY OF TIME TO FINISH WASHING HANDS AND TO LEAVE THE CHANGING ROOM BEFORE YOU ENTER.  Also, please CONTINUE TO MAKE A NOTE OF WHEN YOU ARE AT THE CLUB AND WITH WHOM, for track and trace purposes, and ENSURE THAT THE CLUBHOUSE IS KEPT LOCKED: MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC MUST NOT USE THE TOILETS.

TEAM TENNIS   We're delighted to say that the Oxfordshire LTA plans to start the Winter League as usual at the end of September.

There are usually 10-12 matches in the season, i.e. roughly once a fortnight, mostly Saturdays with a few Sundays, but please note that team tennis does not involve regular commitment unless you want it to. If you are interested in playing team tennis, please let us know as soon as possible:

1. Would you want to play (a) as often as you're picked, ideally almost every match; (b) a lot of the matches - i.e. half or more; (c) occasionally, maybe 2 or 3 times in the season.

2. Any special circumstances - e.g. can only play Saturdays; can only play Sundays.

Your replies will be a big help to us, so many thanks – just email woodstocktennisclub@gmail.com.

It’s good to be back playing this great game!  We hope you’re finding plenty of opportunities to get on court.

No doubt we’ve all been following the news and are aware that we mustn’t relax our observing of social distancing.  And the clubhouse, including the toilets, remains strictly out of bounds – please do not enter.  For the sake of clarity, our updated guidelines are below.  Please read these carefully and take care to follow them to the letter.

COURTS TIMETABLE

Lockdown was a loss to us all, of course, but has been a particular problem for our coaches.  We’re pleased to say that they will soon be able to offer group coaching again and we’ll let you know when booking for new sessions opens.  But before then a number of sessions in the Spring Term’s programme were obviously cancelled because of lockdown (and some pretty awful weather beforehand) and need to be rescheduled this month.

THIS AFFECTS THE COURTS TIMETABLE, starting w/b June 29th.  Please click on this link –http://www.wbtc.org.uk/courts_Timetable.php to see the shape of the week and the times in the next couple of weeks when some courts will not be available.

SECOND PHASE OF RESUMING TENNIS: RULES

Please read and observe the following carefully:

1.  Doubles can now be played as well as singles, but this means that it is more important than ever that:

2.  Social distancing must be strictly maintained.  If playing with someone from another household, avoid handshakes and keep your distance at all times (however strange it may feel, especially at the change of ends).  Change ends by passing at opposite ends of the net.

3.  In the event that all four courts are in play and someone is waiting for a court, please be fair and courteous and observe the simple club rules: Doubles play takes precedence over singles; whoever has been playing longest will play for a maximum of 20 minutes before "revolving".  While waiting to play, stay outside the courts and observe social distancing.

4.  As part of maintaining social distancing, you must allow each other plenty of time and space when entering or leaving the courts and the club grounds.

5.  No club balls will be provided.  You must bring your own balls, which should be marked with your initials.  Balls that stray from another court should not be handled: they should be hit back along the ground with your racket.

6.  Avoid using the net-winder.  The nets will be set at the correct height.  Do not adjust or wind down at the end of play.

7.  The clubhouse, including the toilets, is strictly out of bounds.  Do not enter the clubhouse.

8.  Do not leave anything on the court when you finish playing.

9.  Keep a written record of all times you play and the people that you play with.  We will ask members to send us this information if it is required in the event of known infection.

Please observe these nine points STRICTLY so that everyone can remain safe and well.

Re-opening courts

16 May

Following the slight easing of lockdown restrictions we reopened the courts on Wednesday 13th May.  In this first phase of resuming tennis there are, however, conditions required by the government and the LTA, and these must be STRICTLY observed by us all.

Please read and observe the following carefully:

1.  Play is restricted to singles.  Doubles can be played only if all four players are from the same household.

2.  Social distancing must be strictly maintained.  If playing with someone from another household, avoid handshakes and keep your distance at all times (however strange it may feel), and change ends by passing at opposite ends of the net.

3.  In the event that all four courts are in play and someone is waiting for a court, please be fair and courteous and observe the simple club rule: whoever has been playing longest will play for a maximum of 20 minutes before "revolving".  While waiting to play, stay outside the courts.

4.  As part of maintaining social distancing, you must allow each other plenty of time and space when entering or leaving the courts and the club grounds.

5.  No club balls will be provided.  You must play with your own balls, which should be marked with your initials.

Enjoy returning to tennis, but we all have a part to play in ensuring that this first phase of resuming tennis works safely.  We hope very much to be able to resume more fully soon, and will be in touch as soon as this is possible.

Meanwhile please observe these nine points STRICTLY so that everyone can remain safe and well.

April

31 March

IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE it’s little more than a fortnight since we were merrily talking of how well our teams were doing in the Winter League.  In spite of (no, in defiance of!) the present crisis and shutdown, let’s record the successes so far decided.  Some league positions are still to be resolved when a few final matches at last get played, but CONGRATULATIONS are definitely due to our Ladies C team who won their division with a big win in their final match, and to our Men’s A who’ve won promotion following a fine away win in their final match against the team who’ll probably top the division.  And our Ladies A, Ladies B and Men’s B teams are all in great positions to win at least promotion when their last matches are able to be played.  It’s all trivial, of course, in the context of current events, but…

THE BRILLIANCE OF TENNIS … let’s all look forward in positive spirit to being back on court again soon.  And by the way, in case you’ve ever been in doubt about the value of tennis to your health, you might like to know (from The Daily Telegraph, 25th March) that:

“Last year’s survey of almost 8,600 people for the Copenhagen Heart City Study found that a tennis enthusiast, on average, enjoyed a massive 9.7 more years of life expectancy than a sedentary person. Enough, maybe, to write a series of detective novels, become a proficient pianist, or master a new language.  Tennis was the outlier, with a large gap opening up to badminton in second place (an extra 6.2 years), followed by soccer (4.7) and cycling (3.7).  The miraculous power of tennis is also closely linked to its social dimension – the club spirit, which brings people together at the bar afterwards, and which has surely been responsible for more marriages than any other sport!”

ANYONE FOR PILATES?  Hopefully we’ll soon be back increasing our longevity!  Meanwhile it’s a trying time for us all, no matter what our sport, but all we can do is keep fit as much as possible, and there might even be a silver lining in having time to discover new ways of getting ourselves better-than-ever-in-shape-for-tennis when the new season finally starts.  We know that a number of our members are discovering Pilates.  As preparation (and injury prevention) for tennis there’s probably nothing to beat it – brilliant for balance, flexibility and core strength.  There are loads of free videos to explore online.  Recommended (start with “General Pilates Warm Up” and “Matwork Pilates 1”) is:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-I1ZLxFL3_F3x7QLo9ZDMg

Stay safe and well.  See you soon.

CORONAVIRUS: UPDATE      Meanwhile, we are following all government and LTA guidelines regarding coronavirus.  Please click on the following link for our latest message to all members.

February

Jan 23rd

TEAM TENNIS:  The Winter League is reaching a busy February and March, and things are looking promising for our teams.  At the time of writing, with varying numbers of matches still to play, our Ladies B and Ladies C teams are in with real chances of winning their divisions, our Ladies A, Men’s A and Men’s B teams are competing at the top of tight divisions with excellent chances of promotion, and our Men’s Midweek team are well on track to win that league again.  We’re always keen to include new squad members in all our teams, so if you’re interested in playing team tennis in the new Summer season, please do let us know: just send a note to woodstocktennisclub@gmail.com

SOCIAL TENNIS:  It was great to see the courts full yet again for Club Afternoon last Sunday.  Everyone is very welcome – it’s 1.30 to 3.30 every Sunday, and if you’re free during the week, come along on Tuesdays from 1 till 3.

GUEST FEES: We're always pleased to see members bring guests to play at the club, but please remember the simple rules: no guest can play more than three times in any one year; and a guest fee of £3 is due for each visit.  The easiest way to pay this is by BACS.  Please send the relevant sum by BACS to:

September / October

CONGRATULATIONS to both our Midweek League teams.  Our Men have won the Men’s Midweek League, going unbeaten, and our Ladies have won Division 2 of the Women’s Midweek League and promotion.

TALKING OF TEAM TENNIS…  Come and join in!  We’ve had a splendid number of new players joining the club this summer, and we’re always looking to add to our League squads.  Whether you’re a new member or not, if you’re not yet involved in team tennis and would like to play, do let us know (just email woodstocktennisclub@gmail.com).  We run teams across a wide ability range and want to be as inclusive as possible.  It doesn’t have to be a regular commitment – if you’re only able to play a few (or even just a couple) of matches in a season, that’s fine: let us know.  This is a great time to start – the Winter League begins at the end of this month, so reply by email now.

WANT TO CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR CLUB?  We’ve a couple of important but very un-arduous and un-time-consuming jobs that need doing, and are looking for kind volunteers to join the team who make the Club happen.  We need a current member to be a Trustee of the Club and act as the Trustees’ representative on the Club’s Committee (meeting about half a dozen times a year).  We also need someone to act as Clubhouse Manager, to oversee the maintenance of the building (not to do it – just to oversee!).  If you’re interested and would like to know more details, please talk to Jenny Royal (Chair of the Club’s General Committee) or Sally Bryant (Club Secretary), or simply email woodstocktennisclub@gmail.com.
